10 Westchester Beaches Closed: Sound Swim Alert for Tuesday & Wednesday, July 15 and 16

July 17: Beaches are Open.

July 16: Ten beaches in Westchester are closed to swimming today and tomorrow because of heavy rain overnight.

The 10 beaches are Harbor Island, Beach Point Club, Mamaroneck Beach and Yacht Club, Shore Acres Point Club, and Orienta Beach Club, all in Mamaroneck; Coveleigh Club in Rye; Davenport Club, Greentree Club, Echo Bay Yacht Club, and Hudson Park Beach, in New Rochelle.

Other Long Island Sound beaches in Westchester remain open.

The Westchester County Health Department closes the 10 beaches preemptively for a day if it rains half an inch or more within 24 hours or for two days if it rains an inch or more.

The rain washes sewage out of decaying sewer lines in the communities near Long Island Sound and its tributaries. The sewage ends up at the local beaches, posing a health threat to swimmers.

Save the Sound will be talking about this and other issues at a water quality forum 6:30 Wednesday evening at the Mamaroneck Town Center, 740 West Boston Post Road, Mamaroneck. All are encouraged to attend.

You can also find out how you can help by reading about our new Long Island Sound Pledge program, and then choosing a way to get involved.

We started these Sound Swim Alerts for Westchester last summer. The alerts are a regular notice of which beaches are closed and which open, and where you can go on a hot day to safely cool off in the waters of Long Island Sound.
