PICKING UP THE PIECES ON CONNECTICUT'S BEACHES
|
A major eyesore along Connecticut’s coastline is the litter that beach crowds leave behind each summer. Fortunately, our members have joined in force to pick up the pieces. We organize beach cleanups in the spring and fall.
Save the Sound had a record-breaking turnout in 2009 for its Coastal Cleanup Program. Throughout the spring and fall (including September’s International Coastal Cleanup), a total of 68 cleanups drew 2,771 volunteers, who collected more than 21,500 pounds of trash from 63 miles of Connecticut waterfront. This represents a 59% increase in volunteer participation over 2008, and a 43% increase in pounds of trash collected!
