Betsy Painter joined Save the Sound in April 2024, and is the point person for legal and federal advocacy communications and provides communications support across the organization, with science writing and research guidance for the water quality and ecological restoration programs as needed.

Betsy is also an author and conservation biologist, who is passionate about environmental care and its community dimensions. She has led the communications strategy and outreach and publications for communications teams for the US Fish and Wildlife Service and diverse environmental nonprofits. Her bachelor degree from the University of Tennessee is in Animal Science with specialization in wildlife health and ecology. She studied religion and ecology for her masters at Yale with a focus on the intersection of faith and the natural world and its implications for environmental hope today. On the ecology side, Betsy’s research interests include wetlands ecology and living shorelines, and she enjoys salt marsh escapades and plankton microscopy. For fun, Betsy enjoys painting, knitting, baking, and exploring outside.
